Our Common Future

Sustainability is reshaping the way individuals, communities, nations and organizations view our common future. Although there may be many diverse views—and even conflicting theories—we can all agree that our actions today will impact future generations.

DSM Dyneema strives to create and support sustainable growth with products and services offered to industries that range from commercial aviation to fish farming—energy exploration to cardiovascular surgery—and beyond.  In the course of our everyday business activities, we continually seek opportunities to reduce our impact on the environment, explore new methods and practices, and build “virtuous cycles” of development wherever possible.

Embracing Sustainability

DSM and DSM Dyneema have been enthusiastically committed to the ideals and practices of sustainability for many years.  Sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy as outlined in our Vision 2010 statement.

Our sustainability strategy is anchored on three main pillars:

  • Climate & Energy – Innovating in response to change
  • Health & Wellness – Discovering new relationships
  • Functionality & Performance – Achieving more with less

Leading Sustainability

Recently, DSM regained its number one position in the chemical industry sector on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. From 2004 to 2006, DSM also was awarded the number-one ranking among industry peers such as BASF and Akzo Nobel.

Sustainability in Action

Because our products and collaborations extend across a wide swath of industries, we are well positioned to support sustainable initiatives of many types.  We typically view our sustainability efforts across three key dimensions—People (How can we improve the quality of life of our clients and their customers?) Planet (How can we reduce our environmental impact and contribute to sustainable business and manufacturing processes?) and Profit (How can we ensure DSM Dyneema® and our customers will have the financial resources to continue this important work well into the future?)

Some recent examples of how DSM Dyneema® is putting our sustainability principals into action, include:

People

> We’re helping to create stronger, lighter products (e.g. commercial fishing nets, ropes, and lifting slings) that are inherently safer and help reduce on-the-job injuries.

> We’re helping to protect the lives of law enforcement officers and servicemen and women from the deadliest threats.

> We’re helping to create smaller medical devices in orthopedics and cardiovascular surgeries that help them perform better inside the human body.

Planet

> We’re helping commercial airlines save fuel—and related CO2 emissions—by helping to create lighter weight cargo-handling materials and containers.

Profit

> We are helping the world’s fish farmers increase their yields and realize a longer useful life from their nets, helping to keep costs down.

> With lighter weight lines and lifting slings, we help shipping and terminal operations get vessels secured and unloaded more quickly and safely, thereby reducing operating costs.

A Cooperative and Ongoing Effort

DSM Dyneema recognizes that the path towards a sustainable future means new cooperation among a growing number of individuals and organizations.  We encourage dialog and integration with various stakeholders such as NGO’s and other valued partners.  We welcome new ideas and suggestions to help our company continue to lead the industry in sustainability best practices.
