100 YEARS OF DUTCH PATENT LAW

URMOND (NL), 25 February 2010 – This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Dutch Patent Act coming into force.  The Netherlands has a rich tradition of innovation and inventions, and in celebrating the centennial anniversary the Dutch Patent Office together with the Dutch Institute of Patent Attorneys made a pre-selection of outstanding Dutch inventions, including Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber.  In tribute to the inventions, TNT Post designed a set of commemorative stamps to mark the one hundred years of Dutch patent law. Dyneema®, amongst other great inventions, was featured in the special commemorative stamp set.

On February 8, 1979, DSM filed a patent application for the invention and production of a super strong polyethylene fiber. Since then, DSM Dyneema has developed about 100 inventions protected by over 500 patents.  Over the years, Dyneema® and Dyneema Purity® have been successfully introduced to a diverse set of industries such as medical, auto, food, industrial, offshore, fishing, sports, medical and life protection.

“This past year DSM Dyneema celebrated 30 years since the first Dyneema® patent,” says Christophe Dardel, President of DSM Dyneema. “We are proud of Dyneema® and are glad to be featured on a commemorative stamp celebrating Dutch inventions and one hundred years of Dutch patent law.”

About DSM Dyneema

DSM Dyneema is the inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber™. Dyneema® is an ultra strong polyethylene fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers, both on weight for weight basis. Dyneema® floats on water and is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. The applications are therefore more or less unlimited. Dyneema® is an important component in ropes, cables and nets in the fishing, shipping and offshore industries. Dyneema® is also used in safety gloves for the metalworking industry and in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector. In addition, Dyneema® is also used in bullet resistant armor and clothing for police and military personnel. Dyneema® is produced in Heerlen (The Netherlands), Flaach (Switzerland) and in Greenville, North Carolina (U.S.A.).
