Whether being run through a fairlead or over a capstan, mooring lines are subject to severe abrasive forces that can reduce service life or even cause dangerous line failure.
Q: How do lines made with Dyneema® SK78 compare to generic HMPE alternatives for abrasion resistance?
A: Lines made with Dyneema® SK78 have proven 4x longer abrasion lifetime than HMPE in relevant application testing.
Q: Can abrasion resistance be enhanced any further?
A: While Dyneema® SK78 delivers exceptional abrasion resistance when used in an unjacketed line, it can also be used to offer additional protection when used as a cover in a jacketed line, or as a dedicated chafe protection sleeve. In most applications, the use of Avient’s proprietary abrasion resistance coatings will further enhance the resistance to both external and internal abrasion.
Q: How can abrasion be predicted and mitigated?
A: Avient has developed an abrasion test machine to evaluate external abrasion – particularly useful for winching, lifting, and mooring. This involves a modular test surface used to measure the influence of sharp angles on abrasion rates, the effects of winching, and – particularly important in mooring lines – the abrasion caused by rubbing in fairleads.
Q: Can abrasion performance be compared using testing like yarn-on-yarn testing?
A: No. The yarn-on-yarn test can be used to compare various fibers, but the results cannot be translated into abrasion performance of a rope. For application related abrasion performance, state-of-the-art test equipment is needed to mimic a specific situation. Only by testing on real size rope samples and under realistic conditions it is possible to predict performance in a specific scenario.
