More and more ports are taking the lead to prescribe the type of mooring rope, and more specifically HMPE mooring rope, to avoid unnecessary accidents and consequences. Using any HMPE fiber-based mooring line will lead to faster moorings and better ergonomics. However, only ropes made with Dyneema® SK78 fiber offer the highest safety and reliability from day one onwards. This is because they are built from an HMPE fiber material with engineered and improved characteristics to overcome the main failure mechanisms of a fiber rope.
Ropes with Dyneema® SK78 provide easy handling, high reliability, superior service life and the peace of mind to deliver safe and efficient mooring in ports around the world.
"The use of Lanko®Force resulted in a reduction in rope diameter lead to substantial savings in the weight and size of the mooring winches. Lanko®Force mooring ropes was incorporated in the design of our new build vessel and the cost savings was substantial."
Mooring ropes with SK78 achieve lifetimes in excess of 10 years. In the rare occasion that a rope would break the energy stored in these ropes is significantly lower than the energy that would have been stored in other types of rope, including steel wire. Hence the effect of a rope break will be significantly less. Watch our video on how to reduce rope breakage with Dyneema®.
Did you know that 1 in 4 mooring line incidents results in a leg injury and that even 1 in 7 incidents results in a fatality*?
At Avient our commitment is to protect the people and the environment they live in. That’s why we are committed to have developed a dedicated HMPE fiber with engineered and improved characteristics to overcome the main failure mechanisms of a fiber rope. Next to that, Avient has developed various tools and accurate modelling to predict the line behavior and the fatigue life of mooring lines under varying conditions – hence reducing the chance of dangerous line failures.

Due to the lightweight of Dyneema® combined with its strength, mooring lines with Dyneema® SK78 provide faster mooring and better ergonomics.
Mooring lines with Dyneema® are the safest choice compared to the generally used synthetics like polyesters, nylons, polypropylenes and combinations thereof.
Due to its very low elasticity, the stored energy in mooring lines with Dyneema® is 5 to 10 times less, strongly reducing the risk of severe injuries in case of a break.
Although the stored energy in mooring lines with Dyneema® and SWR are comparable, mooring lines with Dyneema® are much safer in case of break because SWR shows severe snaking (back-lash) and unwinding when it breaks.
Recently we held our webinar ‘putting safety and reliability first, a guide to choosing the safest, most reliable and most cost-effective mooring solutions’.
